Rune tried not to let another whimper escape her, holding the shield. She wanted so very much to let go of the spell. Never in her life had she had to maintain one for so long and never had it been so difficult.

“Keep up the pressure. That shield is coming down!” the slight man yelled.

“No!” Rune croaked out, pushing harder. She had to hold it. St. Benedict’s arm snaked around her middle, holding her close.

“Help’s coming,” he said in her ear. The weight of him behind her grounded her. She had to hold the shield, or they would both be dead. The look in the slight man’s eyes was crazed with his power; he wanted to burn her alive and wouldn’t be satisfied until he had accomplished it.

The world began to waver in and out of focus in front of Rune. She realized she was moments away from losing consciousness and then that would be the end of them both. The slight man’s harsh grin sharpened as he recognized he was about to win.

And Maddie’s legacy would die with Rune.

Like hell it would.

The pulse of magic from within Rune was beyond intense, the next one was like a hurricane. As it hit, thrumming off of Rune’s shield, those outside of it were knocked back, their feet kicking up almost comically in unison. All other magic ended as the casters lost their concentration. The slight young man spun sideways, his fire magic whirling out and away in a small cyclone of flame.

Rune pictured Maddie in her mind. How strong she was, how powerful. Maddie had held shields like this before, defending those who couldn’t protect themselves. Picturing her gave Rune strength, and Rune steadied, feeding her magic into the crystal around her neck. She could do this; just like Maddie, she could hold.

And then it ended all at once.

Rune’s magic dissipated as she collapsed like shattered crystal. If St. Benedict hadn’t been holding her, she would have thumped nerveless as a mannequin. Instead, he stumbled back as he redirected her weight toward him, letting himself hit the wall to slide to the ground as he cradled his body around hers.

“I’ve got you. I’ve got you,” he whispered soothingly as he petted his hand over her fine, white hair.

“Does someone want to explain to me what is happening in here?” a cultured voice asked, cutting over the groans from the fallen attackers.
